The sixth installment of the Alien franchise and Prometheus’ direct sequel, Alien: Covenant aims to revisit the concept behind the iconic monster by contextualizing it around the discussions sparked by its predecessor. The movie, however, has some obvious shortcomings, failing to develop most of its characters and to build a proper climax.
This time, the story accompanies the crew of the spacecraft Covenant, who is traveling on a colonization mission. After an accident that kills the captain of the ship, the team receives a transmission from a nearby planet and, [...]
Warcraft, the adaptation of Blizzard’s famous real-time strategy game, is a narratively ambitious movie that, despite some obvious problems, manages to fascinate the viewer with the complexity of its characters’ arcs.
The movie’s opening scene establishes a rivalry between orcs and humans and then the narrative goes back in time to tell how it grew: the orcs, having destroyed their own world, cross a portal to a place called Azeroth, where they immediately go to war with humans, dwarves, and elves. However, one of the orc leaders, Durotan (Tobby Kebell), believes that his commander Gul’dan (Daniel Wu) is to [...]
Guardians of the Galaxy is an unpretentious action film that chooses to put its focus on the interaction between its characters. With its eccentric cast of heroes, the movie delivers a simple and well-known story that is nevertheless skillfully developed by director and co-writer James Gunn.
The plot of Guardians of the Galaxy is somewhat cliché. The villain wants to destroy an entire planet using an artifact of immeasurable power and the group of heroes, united by the whims of fate, tries to prevent that.
The movie opens brilliantly with a small scene that, within just a couple of minutes, [...]
Exodus: Gods and Kings is a movie that manages to extract most of its dramatic force from the relationship between its protagonist and God. However, by not caring about virtually any other character, Ridley Scott sabotages the potential of the story.
Exodus tells the story of the prince of Egypt, Moses (Christian Bale), who, after discovering he is Hebrew and adopted, is exiled by his brother, Pharaoh Ramses (Joel Edgerton). Beginning to live as a shepherd far from the city in which he grew up, Moses, an extremely skeptical man, decides to climb a mountain considered forbidden grounds by God. The shepherd, then, has an [...]
The two previous Pirates of the Caribbean movies were overflowed with creativity, never afraid to go overboard with the absurd. They were nowhere near perfect; on the contrary, they were flawed in many respects – the second was too long and the third too pretentious – and yet they all managed to entertain. On Stranger Tides, however, is a tiresome and nonsensical movie that doesn’t even feel to be the work of the same screenwriters.
From the initial trilogy, the best movie to help to explain the mistakes made in On Stranger Tides is undoubtedly the third. At World’s End was criticized because of the unnecessary [...]
